“When I was a child I spent a great deal of time in my grandmother's kitchen, chopping onions,
stirring stew, or whipping up a batch of cookies, while Grammy told me tales of her childhood.
Halal Food, Fun, and Laughter, by Linda D. Delgado, recaptures the spirit of my grandmother's
kitchen, combining stories, poems, delightful animated spoon comics, and quotes fom Qur'an and
hadith with recipes from around the world. The result is a warm, good feeling inside, coupled
with delicious food on your table. It's like having your Chicken Soup for the Muslim soul, and
eating it too.”

in which the author put this book together. You get a sense of the things
that are important to her, Allah, family, friends and food."

"I enjoy new and different cookbooks as well as learning about new
cultures, people and places, especially through the foods they eat. Even
though I wasn't that knowledgeable about the Muslim faith I enjoyed reading
and learning from this book.

"It was a very interesting project and far different from other cookbooks
I've read/reviewed. The stories, poems and personal touches really provide
a window into the people who have contributed to your book as well as to
you yourself for having chosen these pieces."

"I totally and completely enjoyed reading through this book. First of all
it is very different than any I own or have seen. Her family stories are
rich and entertaining. I especially liked her beginning phrase, "I have
never been a gourmet cook but I have always been a gourmet eater". So
clever. The recipes are varied, healthy, easy to understand and follow and
so tempting. I am most anxious to try her Pound Cake...."

"The book, “Halal Food, Fun and Laughter” is a delightful collection of
recipes gathered by Linda from many different people. Throughout the book
there are Hadith (sayings related to the prophet Muhammed) and Qur’an
quotes (from the holy book of Islam), most of which are related in some way
to food. I have to admit that I spent quite some time in “Google mode” as I
was almost embarrassed by my ignorance of the Islam faith and Halal. The
book also includes humorous but often thought provoking poems and short
stories as well as many delightful cartoons based on a wooden spoon with a
chef’s hat and a wonderful sense of humor! As you can see, this charming
little book offers far, far more to the reader than just recipes. My
preference is for cookbooks with that ‘something extra’ and this book
certainly qualifies.

This is a very nice book to own. I keep mine in the kitchen for easy access to many great recipes. What is so wonderful about this book, is that it contains a variety of food, some American style recipes, as well as recipes from other countries and nationalities. There is also an entertainment factor to this collection. Poetry, short anecdotes and fun blurbs abound in this book! I absolutely enjoyed it!

Well, it doesn't have pictures, but it has cartoons to make you grin! Of course, I headed to the Desserts section. I made the Green Tea Ice Cream. Turned out yummy! I like the Qu'ran references in this cookbook that are specific to food and health.

I'm the kind of person who flips through recipe books saying, "Oh my goodness! Who in their right mind would make that?" Even when I do settle on a recipe that sounds good, I tend to add ingredients, or change the proportions to suit myself. Amazingly, ALL the recipes in this little book sound great. I haven't tried them all yet, but the ones I have were indeed delicious, without my souping them up.
As for the stories and poems, the first time I picked up the cookbook, I simply had to read through them all. They add a wonderful personal touch to the recipes. It's like cooking with grandma -- listening to her tales while whipping up something wonderful.

Halaal Food, Fun and Laughter by Linda, D. Delgado is a recipe book that is bound to become a favourite in every kitchen. Recipes gathered from aroung the world come together in a collection that creates a veritable taste explosion. The recipes were easy to follow and successful all round. The poetry and foodie anecdotes added a nice touch to the collection making it a rather unique recipe book. On the down side, I found the lack of pictures to be a bit disappointing. But hey, at that price, I'm not going to complain.
