Non-Islamic Terms and Definitions

Colossal Cave—owned by and located in Pima County, Arizona. First used by Ancient American Indians: Hohokam Indians around 900 AD, and the Sobaipuri Indians from about 1456 to 1880. In 1879, a pioneer named Solomon Lick discovered the entrance to the cave.

La Posta Quemada—La Posta Quemada means burned post office (See Colossal Cave)

Saguaro Cacti—Southeastern Arizona is the only place where this cactus grows naturally, and it takes 100 years for a Saguaro to grow one arm from the main body of it.

Stalactites—Cone shaped deposits of minerals that hang from the roof of a cave; formed by water dripping on it.

Stalagmites—Cone shaped deposits of minerals that project upward from the floor of a cave.

Song Dogs—Name American Southwest Indians call coyotes because they howl a lot and seem to answer each other’s howls.
