Petrified Forest National Park

  • 225 million years ago large trees were turned to stone
  • The Painted Desert is part of the 93,533-acre park.
  • History of the area dating back more than 2,000 years
  • History of early people, told by pot shreds, rubble, and pictures on the rocks, fades then stops around 1400 AD
  • Early people were from the Pueblo People culture.
  • Re-discovered in the 1800s and in 1906 selected "forests" were set aside as Petrified Forest National Monument.
