Hyderabad is in the southern part of India and is the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The major language spoken is Urdu. The Qutab Shahi rulers created Hyderabad in 1589.
Hyderabad is a center for Islamic culture and has many fine masjids: Jami Masjid, Mecca Masjid, and Toli Masjid.
Hyderabad is a walled city and has the famous Charminar (56-meter arch above a square gateway that has four minarets). The Mecca Masjid is one of the largest in the world and can
accommodate 10,000 worshipers. Hyderabad is also famous for the Salar Jung Museum, the world’s largest one-man art collection. It has thirty-five rooms that house 35,000 exhibits.
The exhibits include jade, marble statues, rare manuscripts, and Persian miniature paintings. The collection belonged to Mir Yusaf Ali Khan Salar Jung the third, the Prime Minister of
Nizam. Hyderabad also has one of India’s largest Zoos, the Nehru Zoological Park. Hyderabad is famous for its shadow puppetry crafts.
