Saudi Arabia
- Official Name—The official name is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was founded in 1902 by King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahma Al Saud.
- Sovereign Nation recognized by world powers—September. 23, 1932
- Government—Monarchy; Crown Prince appointed, Law of Council of Ministries also has Shoura Council for religious Shari’ah Law.
- Capital—Riyadh
- Size—868,730 square miles
- Geography—Has deserts, plateaus and mountains; bordered on the West by the Red Sea, South by the Indian Ocean, East by the Arabian Gulf, and North by the countries of Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait. The north has high mountains, and the south has the deserts, but gets lots of rain, too.
- Language—Arabic; 77% population lives in urban areas and 23% lives in rural areas.
- Religion—Islam
- Flag—Green banner with sword that says “There is no God but God; and Muhammad is His Messenger”
- Plants and Trees—80 different wild flowers, cacti, salt bushes, shrubs, date palm, apricot, and lime trees
- Products—Grow wheat, millet and barley; Minerals: gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lots of oil (25% of all oil in the world)
- Mammals—There are antelopes, bats, wolves, badgers, camels, goats, hamsters, and famous Arabian horses.
- Cities—Jeddah, Jubal, Yanbu, Damman, Khobar, and the Two Holy Cities of Makkah and Medina
- Medina—Where Prophet Muhammad is buried, famous masjid
- Makkah—Where the Ka’bah is at and pilgrims go to do Hajj: worship Allah.
- Transportation—Arabia has: six major ports for shipping, one railway, a National bus service that began in 1979 that goes to other surrounding countries, 3 International airports and lots of smaller commuter airports, taxis for women because they don’t drive, and other cars and trucks.
- Culture—People like soccer, table-tennis, camel and horse racing, falconry, rifle shooting, cycling, volleyball, and handball; there are Art and Science centers and youth sports cities, too; Saudis like Islamic poetry and calligraphy (fancy writing).
- Education—By 1980, all girls and boys attend school: pre-school, elementary from age 6-12, intermediate ages 12-15 and secondary ages 15-18. There are 8 major universities for men and women. Girls-boys/men-women have separate classes.
- Medical—Men-boys and women-girls go to separate hospitals.
